Have you updated your new Google+ Profile?

Have you updated your new Google+ Profile?

Google has released a new update for Google+, very similar to the recent timeline update for Facebook. Although making a nice change to what was a very plain looking social networking site, Google+ as with Facebook causes some issues for companies promoting their site, as many haven’t updated their new cover photos or decided on their profile layouts.

Unlike Facebook there was no warning before this update otherwise we would have made sure to prepare you for these changes.

This is how your page may look now, and this represents a lot of Google+ users, as they haven’t updated their pages to utilise the new cover areas.

This is how your page could look with just a bit of design work, whether you want small icons like we have gone for here or a larger banner. Click the image to the left to see how we have improved our Google+ page or click here.

Here are some tips on getting your Google+ page representing your company professionally:

Unfortunately the dimensions for the profile page and the cover photo are not the same as Facebook so although you can still use these images for both they will need to be tweaked slightly for the best look.

1) Profile Picture

  • The profile picture has increased slightly from 202px by 192px to a more even 250px by 250px. Although this will stretch to fill the box we recommend that you redesign this to fit.
  • To change this image just hover over the area that contains your profile picture and click on the small banner that appears at the bottom of the image that says “Change profile photo”. Select Upload and either search through your folders or drag and drop the image that you want to replace it with.
  • It would be best to check how the thumbnail of this image looks next to a post once uploaded, but there shouldn’t be a problem as the thumbnail is proportionate to the profile image size.
2) Cover Photo

When designing or choosing a cover photo for your account first you should decide whether a cover photo is the best look for your page. Google + lets you choose between two layouts for this area of your page:

Cover Photo:

  • This banner which has a lot of the right hand side taken up by your profile picture should be 940px by 180px, and should be designed to have it’s main content to be shown on the left hand side to avoid conflict with the profile picture.
  • Unlike Facebook there is currently no restriction to the content in the Cover photo, although nothing official has been released mentioning this topic, so this could change at anytime.

Thumbnails:

  • You can also choose to have a series of smaller images instead of a large cover photo, each of these thumbnail images should be 112px by 112px.
  • Five of these images display side by side in place of the cover photo, this may be useful for displaying new products or images for varying events or holiday promotions.
To change the cover photo just hover over the containing area and click the banner saying “change cover photo” at the bottom of the image, chose upload and either pick an image from your computer or drag and drop the image you want into the area provided.

Other than these changes to Google, the most recent update only brings visual differences, there are no major functionality changes, so as long as the profile image and cover photo are changed that should be it for your changes to Google+… for the next few months anyway.
